In Illinois, possession, deliver, and manufacture of methamphetamine is illegal and are punished rather harshly. The punishments vary according to the amount of methamphetamine involved. Knowing possession of methamphetamine without the intent to deliver, i.e. simple possession of methamphetamine, of less than 5 grams is a class 3 felony, which is carries 2 to 5 years in prison and up to a $25,000 fine. For possession of 5 to 15 grams, it is a class 2 felony, which carries 3 to 7 years in prison and up to a $25,000 fine. For possession of 15 to 100 grams, it is a class 1 felony, which carries 4 to 15 years in prison and up to a $25,000 fine. For 100 to 400 grams, it is a class X felony, which carries 6 to 30 years in prison and up to a $100,000 fine. For 400 to 900 grams, it is a class X felony, which carries 8 to 40 years in prison and up to a $200,000 fine. For more than 900 grams, it is a class X felony, which carries 10 to 50 years in prison and up to a $300,000 fine.
